Gastrointestinal stasis is perhaps the most dangerous concurrent condition, developing secondary to the pain, stress, and anorexia associated with prolapse. Because GI stasis can be fatal within 24-48 hours, its prevention and treatment must be addressed alongside prolapse management. Shock from blood loss and tissue trauma accompanies significant prolapse cases and requires aggressive fluid therapy and supportive care. Hypothermia often develops in rabbits experiencing shock and must be corrected. Infection of the prolapsed tissue or subsequent surgical site is a risk that requires monitoring and potentially antibiotic therapy. If the prolapse occurred during kindling, the newborn kits face their own risks from maternal neglect and inability to nurse.

Conditions with similar presentation include vaginal prolapse, where the vaginal wall protrudes without uterine involvement, and rectal prolapse, where tissue protrudes from the anus. Both require emergency veterinary attention but have different treatment approaches. Retained placenta or retained fetus can cause straining that leads to prolapse, so evaluation for these conditions is part of prolapse assessment. Uterine rupture or torsion are other reproductive emergencies that may occur around the time of kindling. Traumatic injury to the perineal area could potentially be confused with prolapse on initial observation. Accurate diagnosis by a veterinarian enables appropriate treatment for the specific condition present.

Potential complications of uterine prolapse include tissue necrosis if the prolapse is not promptly treated, leading to sepsis and potentially fatal systemic infection. Hemorrhage can be life-threatening if significant blood loss occurs. Adhesions may form after surgery, potentially causing future problems with organ function or comfort. Wound complications including infection, dehiscence, or hernia formation can occur at the surgical site. Chronic GI issues may persist in some rabbits following the stress of prolapse and surgery. Psychological effects including increased fearfulness or behavioral changes may occur in some animals after traumatic experiences. Long-term consequences are minimized by prompt, appropriate treatment and careful post-operative management, with most successfully treated rabbits returning to completely normal health and quality of life.
