Because rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, meaning they cannot breathe effectively through their mouths, any condition that obstructs or irritates the nasal passages poses significant health risks. Decreased appetite frequently accompanies upper respiratory infection due to the combination of feeling unwell, difficulty smelling food, and nasal obstruction affecting normal eating patterns. Reduced food intake rapidly leads to dangerous GI stasis in rabbits, creating a potentially life-threatening cascade of complications. Additionally, the stress of chronic infection suppresses immune function, allowing the infection to spread or secondary problems to develop.
With aggressive veterinary treatment from a rabbit-savvy veterinarian, many upper respiratory infections can be successfully controlled, though eradication of Pasteurella may be difficult once the organism is established. Early intervention dramatically improves outcomes, but recognizing early symptoms requires owners to understand that rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness. By the time respiratory symptoms are obvious, the infection may be well-established.
