Treponema cuniculi, commonly known as rabbit syphilis or vent disease, is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema cuniculi, which is closely related to but distinct from the organism that causes syphilis in humans. This condition primarily affects the genital region (the "vent" area) of rabbits but can also spread to involve the face, particularly around the nose, lips, eyelids, and ears. Despite its colloquial name of rabbit syphilis, this disease is not transmissible to humans or other animal species and poses no zoonotic risk. Vent disease occurs worldwide and is particularly common in breeding colonies and situations where rabbits have close physical contact with infected individuals.
The causative organism, Treponema cuniculi, is a delicate spiral-shaped bacterium (spirochete) that cannot survive long outside of the host's body. Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact, most commonly during mating, though the bacteria can also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces, grooming behaviors between rabbits, and from mother to offspring during birth or nursing. The infection typically begins at the site of initial contact, usually the genitals, and may remain localized or spread to involve facial tissues. The incubation period from exposure to visible symptoms ranges from several weeks to several months, during which time infected rabbits can transmit the disease to others.
The impact of vent disease on rabbit health ranges from mild skin lesions that may resolve with treatment to more severe cases involving extensive crusting, ulceration, and secondary infections. Affected rabbits often experience discomfort and may show changes in behavior including reluctance to mate, increased grooming of affected areas, and signs of pain during urination or defecation if lesions are present around the urogenital openings. In breeding operations, vent disease can cause significant disruption as affected rabbits must be identified, isolated, and treated before returning to breeding. Secondary complications can include bacterial superinfection of ulcerated lesions and, if discomfort leads to reduced appetite, the potentially life-threatening development of GI stasis.
Vent disease is highly treatable with appropriate antibiotic therapy, and the prognosis for affected rabbits is generally excellent when treatment is initiated promptly. The antibiotic of choice is penicillin G, which must be administered by injection rather than orally, as oral penicillin-based antibiotics are dangerous to rabbits. Treatment typically involves a series of injections over several weeks, and most rabbits show significant improvement within days of starting therapy. However, because rabbits can harbor the organism asymptomatically and serve as carriers, identifying and treating all exposed individuals is essential for disease control.
