Any rabbit with testicular tumors who shows decreased appetite or reduced fecal output requires immediate attention to prevent GI stasis from becoming critical. Hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) can develop when rabbits stop eating for any reason, making prompt treatment of conditions that reduce appetite essential.

Conditions with similar presentations must be distinguished from testicular tumors through careful veterinary evaluation. Orchitis (testicular infection/inflammation) can cause testicular swelling that may be mistaken for tumors, though orchitis typically causes more acute onset, fever, and pain. Testicular torsion causes sudden, severe swelling with intense pain and requires emergency surgery. Inguinal hernias can create scrotal swelling that might be confused with testicular enlargement. Abscesses in the scrotal or inguinal area, common in rabbits due to their susceptibility to Pasteurella infections, can mimic testicular masses. Proper diagnosis through physical examination, imaging, and potentially fine needle aspiration helps differentiate these conditions and guide appropriate treatment.

Potential complications of testicular tumors include metastatic spread to other organs if the tumor is malignant and not treated promptly. Lung metastases can cause progressive respiratory difficulty, while liver metastases may lead to organ dysfunction. Local complications can include tumor hemorrhage, ulceration through the scrotal skin, or testicular torsion of the enlarged testicle. The hormonal effects of some tumor types can cause behavioral changes or impact overall metabolism. Secondary complications from reduced eating, including GI stasis and hepatic lipidosis, represent some of the most immediate and dangerous risks. Preventing these complications requires early detection, prompt treatment, and careful supportive care throughout the treatment process, emphasizing why regular veterinary care and owner awareness are so important for intact male rabbits.
