Areas of the ears with less pigmentation or sparse fur offer minimal natural protection against UV radiation. The inner surface of the ear, which is often lightly furred or nearly hairless, receives direct exposure when rabbits hold their ears upright or when sunlight reflects from surfaces below. Unlike many animals, rabbits cannot sweat to cool themselves, making sun exposure additionally problematic because it contributes to overall heat stress, which can be life-threatening in this species.
The impact of ear sunburn on rabbit health depends on severity. Mild cases cause discomfort, redness, and temporary sensitivity that resolves with supportive care and sun avoidance. More severe burns can cause significant pain, blistering, scabbing, and secondary infection that requires veterinary treatment. Chronic repeated sun exposure can lead to permanent skin changes and may increase the risk of skin cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma, which has been documented in rabbits and tends to affect light-pigmented areas including the ears. Pain from sunburned ears can cause decreased appetite, and in rabbits, reduced food intake can rapidly lead to GI stasis, a potentially life-threatening condition. As prey animals, rabbits may hide signs of discomfort, so owners should proactively check ears for sun damage in at-risk rabbits.
Sunburn of the ears is highly preventable through appropriate housing and management, and when it does occur, it is treatable with supportive care. The foundation of management is prevention through provision of shade and limiting sun exposure during peak UV hours. Treatment of established sunburn focuses on comfort measures, preventing infection, and allowing healing while ensuring no further sun exposure. Rabbit-savvy veterinary care may be needed for severe cases or if secondary infection develops. With appropriate prevention and prompt treatment when needed, ear sunburn should not cause long-term problems for affected rabbits, though chronically affected rabbits may require ongoing sun protection measures throughout their lives.
