Streptococcal infections in rabbits are caused by various species of Streptococcus bacteria, with different species producing distinct clinical presentations. The most notable streptococcal condition in rabbits is cervical lymphadenitis, also known as lumps, caused primarily by Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus and Lancefield group C streptococci. This condition causes characteristic abscesses in the lymph nodes of the head and neck region. Other streptococcal species, including Streptococcus pyogenes and various Group D streptococci, can cause respiratory infections, skin infections, septicemia, and other conditions. Streptococcal infections are particularly common in commercial rabbitries but also occur in pet rabbits, especially those from large breeding operations.
Streptococcal bacteria typically enter the body through breaks in the oral mucosa, often caused by the normal process of eating rough hay or by dental abnormalities. The organisms may also enter through respiratory tissues, skin wounds, or other routes depending on the species involved. Once inside the body, the bacteria spread through lymphatic channels to regional lymph nodes, where they establish infection and trigger abscess formation. The submandibular and retropharyngeal lymph nodes are most commonly affected, producing the characteristic jaw and neck swellings of cervical lymphadenitis. Carrier animals may harbor the bacteria in their tonsils or nasal passages without showing clinical signs, serving as a source of infection for others.
The impact of streptococcal infections on rabbit health ranges from localized abscesses that are primarily cosmetic concerns to severe systemic disease that can be life-threatening. Cervical lymphadenitis produces swellings that can become quite large, interfering with eating and breathing if they impinge on vital structures. The discomfort and difficulty eating can lead to reduced food intake, which in rabbits quickly leads to secondary problems including GI stasis. Systemic streptococcal infections, though less common, can cause septicemia with involvement of multiple organs including the heart, kidneys, and joints. In pregnant rabbits, streptococcal infection can cause reproductive losses. Young rabbits and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe manifestations.
Treatment of streptococcal infections requires veterinary care from a practitioner experienced with rabbits, as the species has unique treatment considerations. Similar to staphylococcal abscesses, streptococcal abscesses in rabbits contain thick, caseous pus that does not drain easily, often requiring surgical intervention in addition to antibiotic therapy. The choice of antibiotics must consider both effectiveness against streptococci and safety for rabbits, as many antibiotics commonly used in other species are dangerous for rabbits. With appropriate treatment, many cases can be resolved, though recurrence is possible if the underlying source of infection is not eliminated. Prevention focuses on reducing stress, maintaining good hygiene, and avoiding dental trauma that provides bacterial entry points.
