The condition develops when the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that normally hold the legs in proper position fail to provide adequate support, allowing the limbs to slide outward on smooth surfaces. The impact of splayed legs on an affected rabbit's quality of life can be substantial if left untreated. Rabbits with this condition struggle to move normally, cannot position themselves properly for nursing in young kits, and face difficulty reaching cecotropes for essential nutrition. Without intervention, affected kits often fail to thrive, becoming progressively weaker due to inadequate nutrition and the physical strain of attempting to move with malpositioned limbs. Secondary complications including pressure sores, muscle atrophy, and spinal problems can develop in rabbits who survive without treatment. The condition also places significant stress on the rabbit, as they are unable to exhibit normal behaviors or escape perceived threats.
The prognosis for splayed legs varies dramatically based on the severity of the condition and how quickly treatment begins. When identified within the first few days of life and treated promptly with corrective hobbling or splinting techniques, many rabbits achieve full or near-full recovery with normal leg function. Early intervention is absolutely critical, as the developing bones and joints of young rabbits are still malleable and responsive to corrective positioning.
