Potential complications from sinusitis extend to adjacent structures with potentially serious consequences. Osteomyelitis develops when infection extends to involve facial bones, creating treatment-resistant chronic disease. Orbital extension may threaten vision or cause obvious eye changes including proptosis. In severe cases, infection may extend to involve the brain or meninges with devastating neurological consequences. Chronic antibiotic therapy may alter intestinal flora, requiring monitoring of gastrointestinal function. Secondary GI stasis from prolonged illness and reduced appetite poses immediate life-threatening risk. Hepatic lipidosis develops if significant anorexia occurs. Recognition of potential complications guides proactive monitoring and enables early intervention to preserve the rabbit's health and quality of life.
