Dental disease with abscess formation is one of the most common precursors in rabbits. Pasteurellosis, infection with Pasteurella multocida, frequently progresses to septicemia when not contained. Pneumonia from various bacterial causes can lead to systemic infection. Pyometra in unspayed females commonly causes septicemia if not treated promptly. Enteritis and cecal dysbiosis can allow bacterial translocation from the gut into the bloodstream. Wound infections, particularly deep or puncture wounds, may progress to septicemia. GI stasis commonly develops secondary to septicemia itself due to illness and decreased food intake, creating a compounding crisis.

Conditions with symptoms similar to septicemia include other causes of severe systemic illness in rabbits. GI stasis can cause severe depression, anorexia, and cardiovascular compromise that may initially appear similar to early septicemia. Severe dehydration from any cause may present with similar vital sign abnormalities. Heat stroke causes collapse and cardiovascular compromise resembling septic shock. Toxin ingestion can cause acute severe illness. Severe pain from any cause can produce shock-like states. Accurate diagnosis through physical examination, history, and blood work distinguishes these conditions, though empirical treatment for septicemia may be warranted while diagnostics are pending if clinical suspicion is high.

Potential complications of septicemia include multiple organ damage from the combined effects of infection and overwhelming inflammation. Kidney injury is common during septicemia and may result in lasting renal dysfunction requiring ongoing management. Liver damage may occur from poor perfusion and direct inflammatory injury. GI stasis develops secondary to severe illness and compounds the metabolic crisis. Disseminated intravascular coagulation, a clotting disorder, may develop in severe sepsis, causing both bleeding and clotting problems. Respiratory failure may require ongoing support. Survivors of severe septicemia may experience prolonged recovery times and may have lasting organ damage affecting long-term health and management needs.
