Sepsis in rabbits represents one of the most serious and life-threatening medical emergencies, characterized by a severe systemic inflammatory response to infection that can rapidly progress to multiple organ dysfunction and death. Unlike a localized infection that remains contained to one area of the body, sepsis occurs when pathogens or their toxic products enter the bloodstream, triggering an overwhelming immune response that damages tissues and organs throughout the body. Septic shock represents the most severe form of sepsis, where cardiovascular collapse occurs and the body can no longer maintain adequate blood pressure to perfuse vital organs. Rabbits are particularly vulnerable to rapid deterioration from sepsis due to their sensitive physiology and tendency to hide signs of illness until disease is advanced.
Sepsis develops when an existing infection overwhelms the body's defenses and spreads systemically. In rabbits, common primary infection sources include abscesses from dental disease or bite wounds, respiratory infections particularly pasteurellosis, gastrointestinal infections and enteritis, reproductive tract infections such as pyometra or metritis, urinary tract infections, and post-surgical wound infections. The initial infection may have been present for days or weeks before systemic spread occurs, though in some cases sepsis develops rapidly. Bacteria are the most common cause, with Pasteurella multocida being particularly prevalent in rabbits, but other organisms including other bacteria, fungi, or parasites can also cause sepsis.
The impact of sepsis on the rabbit's body is devastating and multifaceted. The systemic inflammatory response damages blood vessel walls, causes abnormal blood clotting throughout the body, and impairs oxygen delivery to tissues. The cardiovascular system struggles to maintain blood pressure as blood vessels dilate inappropriately. The kidneys, liver, lungs, and other organs begin to fail as they are deprived of adequate blood flow and oxygen. The gut barrier breaks down, potentially allowing additional bacteria to enter the bloodstream and worsen the infection. Secondary GI stasis virtually always accompanies sepsis, adding to the metabolic derangements. Without aggressive treatment, multiple organ failure progresses rapidly to death.
Sepsis is treatable but requires immediate, aggressive intervention to have any chance of success. The mortality rate for sepsis in rabbits is high even with optimal treatment, and delays in seeking care dramatically worsen outcomes. Treatment involves intensive supportive care including fluid therapy to maintain blood pressure, broad-spectrum rabbit-safe antibiotics to combat the infection, medications to support cardiovascular function, and addressing the primary infection source if possible. Finding an emergency exotic veterinarian experienced with critically ill rabbits is essential, as the treatment protocols differ significantly from those used in dogs and cats. Early recognition and immediate veterinary care offer the best chance for survival, but even with everything done correctly, some rabbits do not survive.
