Root elongation is a progressive dental condition in rabbits in which the roots of the teeth grow abnormally into the surrounding jaw bone and skull structures rather than maintaining their normal position. In healthy rabbits, the continuously growing teeth remain in balance, with crown growth matched by wear from chewing and root growth contained within appropriate boundaries. When this balance is disrupted, the apical (root) portion of the teeth can elongate and penetrate into surrounding structures including the mandible (lower jaw), maxilla (upper jaw), nasal passages, and the floor of the eye socket. This condition is one of the most common and significant dental problems affecting domestic rabbits, particularly those fed inadequate diets or those with genetic predisposition to dental disease.
The development of root elongation typically results from acquired dental disease, most commonly caused by insufficient abrasive wear from inadequate hay consumption. When rabbit teeth do not wear properly at the crown, the continuous growth pushes the tooth in both directions, both elongating the crown and driving the root deeper into the bone. The roots of rabbit teeth are open and continue growing throughout life, unlike human teeth which have closed, fixed roots. As roots elongate, they cause progressive changes in the surrounding bone, potentially penetrating into spaces where they cause serious secondary problems. Lower cheek tooth roots may penetrate through the ventral (bottom) surface of the mandible, creating palpable bumps. Upper cheek tooth roots may penetrate into the nasal cavity or orbit.
The impact of root elongation on affected rabbits ranges from mild discomfort detectable only on radiographs to severe, life-threatening complications. Early root elongation may cause no obvious symptoms while still being visible on skull radiographs as an incidental finding or during investigation of subtle changes in eating behavior. Progressive elongation causes increasing pain during eating, leading to reduced food intake and secondary GI stasis, which can be fatal in rabbits if not addressed. Upper root elongation can obstruct the nasolacrimal duct causing chronic eye discharge, penetrate into the nasal passages causing respiratory symptoms, or enter the retrobulbar space causing eye protrusion. Lower root elongation can cause mandibular swelling, abscess formation, and bone destruction.
While root elongation cannot be reversed once it has occurred, the condition can often be managed to maintain quality of life through a combination of dental procedures, supportive care, and dietary optimization. Treatment focuses on addressing crown overgrowth and molar spurs through regular dental burring, managing any secondary infections, extracting severely affected teeth when necessary, and ensuring the rabbit can eat comfortably. Early detection through routine dental radiographs allows intervention before severe complications develop. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in rabbit dental disease is essential for proper diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of this complex condition.
