RHDV1, commonly referred to as classic Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD) or classic Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD), represents the original strain of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus that emerged in the 1980s and caused devastating epidemics in rabbit populations worldwide. This highly lethal calicivirus was first identified in 1984 in domestic European rabbits imported from Germany to China, and within years it had spread to nearly every continent where rabbits are raised. RHDV1 causes acute, fatal liver disease characterized by massive hepatic necrosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, resulting in hemorrhaging from multiple organs and rapid death. The virus specifically targets domestic European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and has been responsible for massive losses in both commercial rabbitries and pet populations.
The classic RHDV1 strain causes infection through the same mechanisms as other lagoviruses, targeting liver cells and causing overwhelming organ failure within hours of symptom onset. A distinctive characteristic of RHDV1 compared to the newer RHDV2 variant is its age-related susceptibility pattern. Classic RHDV1 primarily causes fatal disease in adult rabbits over eight to ten weeks of age, while young rabbits under this age typically remain protected by maternal antibodies and may not develop clinical disease even when exposed. This age resistance provided some natural protection for young kits in affected populations, though it did not prevent massive die-offs among adult breeding stock. The virus spreads through direct contact, contaminated materials, and environmental persistence, with mortality rates reaching 70 to 90 percent in susceptible adult populations.
The historical impact of RHDV1 on global rabbit populations was catastrophic when the virus first emerged and spread. Commercial rabbitries experienced devastating losses, with some operations losing their entire adult breeding populations within days of disease introduction. Wild European rabbit populations in areas where the virus was endemic suffered significant population crashes. The economic impact on the rabbit meat and fur industries was substantial, particularly in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Interestingly, in Australia, RHDV1 was deliberately released as a biological control agent to reduce feral rabbit populations that were causing extensive environmental damage. This controlled release demonstrated both the lethality of the virus and its effectiveness at reducing rabbit numbers, though it also raised concerns about potential spread to domestic rabbits.
While RHDV1 remains present in some regions of the world, it has been largely displaced by the newer RHDV2 variant in many areas. RHDV2 emerged in France in 2010 and has since spread globally, becoming the dominant circulating strain in most countries including the United States. The two strains are immunologically distinct, meaning that vaccines and immunity developed against RHDV1 do not provide reliable protection against RHDV2, and vice versa. Rabbit owners should work with their veterinarians to understand which viral strains are present in their geographic area and ensure appropriate vaccination coverage. In regions where both strains circulate, bivalent vaccines covering both RHDV1 and RHDV2 may be recommended to provide comprehensive protection against this devastating disease.
