Rabbit syphilis, also known as vent disease or treponematosis, is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by Treponema cuniculi, a spirochete bacterium closely related to the organism that causes syphilis in humans. Despite the similar name, rabbit syphilis is species-specific and cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals. This condition primarily affects the genital region but can also spread to other areas of the body including the nose, lips, chin, and eyelids. Rabbit syphilis is most commonly seen in breeding rabbits and sexually mature intact adults, though it can occasionally occur in pet rabbits that have had contact with infected animals.
The causative organism, Treponema cuniculi, is transmitted through direct contact, primarily during mating. The bacterium can also spread through contact with contaminated bedding or through mother-to-offspring transmission during birth or nursing. Once the organism enters the body, it causes characteristic lesions that begin as small, reddened areas and progress to crusty sores. The incubation period can range from three to sixteen weeks, which means infected rabbits may transmit the disease before showing any clinical signs.
Rabbit syphilis significantly impacts the health and welfare of affected rabbits, causing discomfort, pain, and potential complications if left untreated. The lesions can become secondary infected with other bacteria, leading to more severe skin damage and systemic illness. In breeding operations, this disease can spread rapidly through a colony if not identified and treated promptly. The condition also affects quality of life, as the lesions can make urination and defecation painful, potentially leading to reduced food intake and subsequent gastrointestinal complications including GI stasis.
The good news is that rabbit syphilis is highly treatable when diagnosed early and managed appropriately by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Antibiotic therapy, specifically penicillin injections, is extremely effective at eliminating the infection. However, because rabbits hide illness and the early stages of this disease can be subtle, regular health checks are essential for early detection. With proper treatment, most rabbits make a complete recovery, though scarring may occur in cases where lesions were severe. Prevention through quarantine of new rabbits and regular health monitoring is crucial for protecting rabbit colonies from this contagious disease.
