Myxomatosis causes swelling and lesions around the face and genitals but is a viral disease with very different treatment and prognosis; it is reportable in many areas and often fatal. Pasteurella infections can cause skin abscesses and facial lesions but typically have a different appearance and may be accompanied by respiratory symptoms. Urine scald causes irritation and fur loss around the genital area from contact with urine, usually related to mobility problems, obesity, or improper housing. Hutch burn is similar, resulting from contact with soiled bedding. Skin mite infestations cause crusty lesions, particularly on ears and face. Tumors or cancers can produce unusual masses or skin changes. Your veterinarian will differentiate these conditions through examination and appropriate testing.

Potential complications of rabbit syphilis include scarring from severe or chronic lesions, which may occasionally cause structural issues if scarring narrows natural openings. Secondary abscesses may form if bacteria invade damaged tissue deeply. Chronic stress from prolonged infection can suppress immune function and predispose the rabbit to other health problems. If severe genital lesions impair urination or defecation, life-threatening complications can develop. Hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition, can result from prolonged anorexia in affected rabbits. Prevention of complications relies on early diagnosis and treatment, maintaining nutrition throughout the treatment period, and monitoring closely for any signs of secondary problems. With appropriate care, serious complications are uncommon and most rabbits recover fully.
