Rex and Mini Rex breeds may be more prone to intestinal issues due to their unique fur structure and related grooming behaviors. Any rabbit with chronic gastrointestinal disease, regardless of breed, faces elevated rectal prolapse risk.

Screening and prevention recommendations vary based on risk factors rather than breed alone. All female rabbits not intended for breeding should be spayed to eliminate uterine prolapse risk entirely. For breeding programs, careful selection should avoid does with history of difficult kindling, retained kits, or previous reproductive complications. Breeding does should receive thorough veterinary examination before breeding and careful monitoring during pregnancy and kindling. All rabbits should receive regular fecal examinations to detect and treat parasitic infections before they cause significant straining. Young rabbits should have dental evaluations to identify malocclusion early and implement management strategies before secondary gastrointestinal problems develop. Complications that may develop from prolapse or its treatment include several serious conditions. Sepsis can develop from bacterial contamination of exposed necrotic tissue and represents a life-threatening complication requiring aggressive treatment. Hepatic lipidosis may develop if the rabbit does not eat for extended periods, making nutritional support critical during treatment and recovery. Fecal incontinence can occur following extensive rectal surgery and may require ongoing management. Stricture formation at surgical sites can cause difficulty with defecation or incomplete bowel emptying. Adhesions following abdominal surgery may cause chronic discomfort or future complications. Secondary GI stasis remains a risk throughout the treatment and recovery period and requires vigilant prevention and monitoring.
