Privet toxicity is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when rabbits ingest leaves, berries, or bark from privet shrubs (Ligustrum species). Privet is one of the most commonly planted hedging shrubs throughout temperate regions worldwide, making it a widespread hazard for rabbits with access to gardens, landscaped areas, or outdoor spaces where these plants grow. All parts of privet plants are toxic to rabbits, with the highest concentration of toxins found in the berries and leaves. The evergreen or semi-evergreen nature of many privet species means the hazard persists year-round, unlike deciduous plants that may be less accessible during winter months.
The toxic compounds in privet include a glycoside called ligustrin (also known as syringin), terpenoid glycosides, and other irritant compounds. These toxins affect multiple body systems, causing severe gastrointestinal irritation, cardiovascular effects, and potential neurological symptoms at higher doses. The berries, which appear as clusters of small black or dark blue fruits, are particularly dangerous because they may attract curious rabbits and contain especially high concentrations of toxic compounds. Even the leaves, commonly encountered when privet is used as hedging, contain sufficient toxins to cause serious poisoning in rabbits.
Privet toxicity represents a significant concern for rabbit owners because of the plant's extreme prevalence in residential landscaping. Privet hedges are among the most common boundary plantings in suburban and urban areas, and individual privet shrubs are frequently used as ornamental specimens. This ubiquity means that many outdoor rabbit environments, particularly in established neighborhoods, may border privet plants that the owner does not even realize are present. Additionally, privet clippings from hedge trimming may be inadvertently offered to rabbits or may fall into areas where rabbits have access. Because rabbits cannot vomit to expel ingested toxins, consumed privet material will continue to be absorbed as it passes through the digestive tract, and secondary GI stasis frequently compounds the primary toxicity.
With prompt veterinary treatment including aggressive supportive care and decontamination measures, many rabbits can survive privet toxicity, though the prognosis depends on the amount consumed and how quickly treatment begins. Treatment focuses on limiting further toxin absorption through activated charcoal administration, providing aggressive fluid therapy to support organ function, managing gastrointestinal complications, and addressing symptoms as they arise. Prevention is far preferable to treatment, and rabbit owners should carefully assess their environment for privet and ensure their rabbits have no access to this common but dangerous plant.
