The impact of bacterial pneumonia on rabbit health is profound and potentially fatal. Affected rabbits experience significant respiratory distress, oxygen deprivation affecting all body systems, profound lethargy, and complete loss of appetite. Because rabbits hide illness instinctively and pneumonia often develops as progression of seemingly mild upper respiratory symptoms, the condition may be surprisingly advanced by the time it becomes clinically obvious. Secondary complications develop rapidly, particularly GI stasis from the combination of not eating, severe stress, and systemic illness. Septicemia may develop as bacteria spread from the lungs to the bloodstream, causing widespread organ dysfunction. The high metabolic rate of rabbits means that both disease progression and deterioration occur faster than in larger animals.
Treatment of bacterial pneumonia requires intensive intervention combining aggressive antibiotic therapy, oxygen supplementation, fluid support, and meticulous attention to nutrition and gut health. Despite optimal treatment, prognosis for bacterial pneumonia in rabbits is guarded, with mortality rates significantly higher than for upper respiratory infections. Early intervention before severe lung damage occurs provides the best chance for survival, emphasizing the critical importance of recognizing respiratory distress and seeking immediate veterinary care. Recovery, when achieved, may be prolonged and require extended antibiotic courses and supportive care.
