This condition can be caused by various infectious agents, with bacterial pathogens being most common, though viral, fungal, and parasitic causes also occur. Bacterial pneumonia in rabbits is frequently associated with Pasteurella multocida, the organism responsible for the common upper respiratory infection known as snuffles, which can descend into the lungs. Pneumonia can affect rabbits of any age, breed, or sex, though stressed, immunocompromised, or otherwise weakened rabbits are at increased risk for developing severe disease.
The development of pneumonia in rabbits typically begins when infectious organisms reach the lower respiratory tract and establish infection in the lung tissue. Bacteria may descend from upper respiratory infections, be inhaled directly from the environment, or rarely spread through the bloodstream from infections elsewhere in the body. Once in the lungs, pathogens trigger an inflammatory response as the immune system attempts to fight the infection. This results in accumulation of inflammatory cells, fluid, and debris in the airways and alveoli, the tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs. The resulting consolidation of lung tissue impairs the rabbit's ability to effectively oxygenate blood and can progress to respiratory failure if untreated.
The impact of pneumonia on a rabbit's health can be severe, and this condition requires prompt veterinary attention. As lung tissue becomes inflamed and consolidated, the rabbit's respiratory capacity decreases, leading to labored breathing, reduced activity, and decreased appetite. Rabbits are obligate nasal breathers with limited respiratory reserve, making any lung compromise particularly dangerous for this species. Additionally, sick rabbits who stop eating quickly develop secondary GI stasis, which can be fatal within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. The combination of respiratory compromise and risk of GI stasis makes pneumonia a condition requiring urgent, comprehensive treatment. Rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness, so by the time symptoms are obvious to owners, the infection may be well established.
Treatment of pneumonia in rabbits is possible with prompt diagnosis and appropriate therapy, though outcomes depend on severity, causative organism, and the rabbit's overall health status. Early intervention by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian significantly improves prognosis, emphasizing the importance of seeking care at the first signs of respiratory illness. Treatment typically involves appropriate antibiotic therapy, supportive care including nutritional support and hydration, and oxygen supplementation for severe cases. With aggressive treatment, many rabbits recover from pneumonia, though some may develop chronic respiratory issues.
