Potential complications directly attributable to pinworm infection are rare given the benign nature of typical infection. Perianal dermatitis may develop secondary to irritation and scratching, particularly if the skin is broken. Severe chronic irritation could theoretically lead to self-trauma, though significant self-inflicted injury is uncommon. Rectal prolapse has been rarely reported in association with heavy pinworm infection, though other contributing factors are usually present. Secondary bacterial infection of irritated perianal skin is possible.
