Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor arising from bone tissue and represents one of the most aggressive and serious forms of cancer that can affect rabbits. This primary bone cancer originates from osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone formation, and is characterized by the production of abnormal bone or osteoid material by the cancerous cells. While osteosarcoma is relatively uncommon in rabbits compared to some other species, it carries significant clinical importance due to its aggressive nature, tendency to cause severe pain, and high potential for metastasis to other organs, particularly the lungs. Osteosarcoma can occur in rabbits of any age but is most frequently diagnosed in middle-aged to senior rabbits, with those over five years of age being at greatest risk.
The development of osteosarcoma involves malignant transformation of bone-forming cells, leading to uncontrolled proliferation and the formation of destructive tumors that erode and replace normal bone tissue. These tumors most commonly affect the long bones of the limbs, though they can also arise in the skull, spine, pelvis, or other skeletal locations. The exact triggers for osteosarcoma development in rabbits are not fully understood, but the process involves genetic mutations that cause cells to escape normal growth controls. Unlike some other species where trauma or metallic implants have been associated with osteosarcoma development, no such clear associations have been established in rabbits.
The impact of osteosarcoma on a rabbit's health and quality of life is substantial and often devastating. Bone tumors cause severe pain as they grow and destroy normal bone architecture, leading to lameness, reduced mobility, and reluctance to engage in normal activities. The weakening of affected bones can result in pathological fractures, where bones break during normal activities due to structural compromise from the tumor. Pain and reduced mobility frequently lead to decreased appetite, which in rabbits can rapidly progress to life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis. Additionally, osteosarcoma has a high rate of metastasis, most commonly spreading to the lungs, which further compromises the rabbit's health and significantly affects prognosis.
Treatment options for osteosarcoma in rabbits are limited compared to those available for dogs and humans, and the prognosis is generally guarded to poor. Surgical amputation of the affected limb can provide pain relief and remove the primary tumor in cases of appendicular osteosarcoma, though metastatic disease may already be present at the time of diagnosis. Rabbits can adapt remarkably well to three-legged mobility in many cases. However, tumors in locations that cannot be surgically removed, such as the spine or pelvis, present particular challenges. Chemotherapy protocols for rabbit osteosarcoma are not well established. Early detection is challenging because rabbits instinctively hide signs of pain and illness, and by the time symptoms become obvious, the disease may be advanced. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian with oncology experience is essential for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and compassionate end-of-life care when needed.
