Because bone loss is gradual and internal, there are often no obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs or until imaging reveals significant bone changes. When symptoms do appear, they typically include reluctance to move, decreased activity, and apparent stiffness or discomfort. The most serious consequence is pathological fracture, where bones break during normal activities that healthy bones would easily withstand. In rabbits, spinal fractures are particularly devastating and commonly result in paralysis. The combination of fragile skeleton and powerful hind leg muscles creates a dangerous situation where even routine handling or a startled jump could cause serious injury.
Treatment of osteoporosis focuses on slowing further bone loss, supporting bone maintenance through appropriate nutrition and exercise, and preventing fractures through environmental modifications. Unlike some conditions that can be reversed, lost bone density is difficult to fully restore, making prevention and early intervention essential. Management involves dietary optimization with appropriate calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D; encouraging safe physical activity that stimulates bone maintenance; modifying the environment to prevent falls and trauma; and addressing any underlying conditions contributing to bone loss.
