Hepatic lipidosis risk increases dramatically, as obese rabbits that stop eating mobilize massive fat stores that overwhelm the liver. Respiratory function may be compromised by thoracic and abdominal fat accumulation. Perhaps most critically, obese rabbits cannot perform normal grooming behaviors, particularly reaching the perineal area to consume cecotropes and maintain cleanliness, leading to cecal impaction, urine scald, and fly strike risk. Obesity also increases anesthetic risk for any needed surgical procedures.
Obesity is treatable through dietary modification and increased activity, though safe weight loss in rabbits requires careful management to avoid dangerous complications. Rapid weight loss or sudden food restriction can trigger fatal hepatic lipidosis in obese rabbits, making gradual calorie reduction essential. Treatment success depends on owner commitment to long-term dietary and lifestyle changes.
