Mucoid enteropathy is a serious gastrointestinal syndrome affecting rabbits, characterized by the accumulation of excessive mucus throughout the intestinal tract and cecum. This condition represents one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality in young rabbits, particularly those between four and fourteen weeks of age during and shortly after the weaning period. While the exact cause remains incompletely understood, mucoid enteropathy appears to result from disruption of normal cecal fermentation and intestinal function, leading to overproduction of mucus by the intestinal lining as a protective response to underlying dysfunction.
The condition develops when the delicate balance of the rabbit's hindgut fermentation system becomes disrupted. Rabbits depend on a complex community of microorganisms in their cecum to ferment fiber and produce essential nutrients. When this bacterial population becomes imbalanced, often due to dietary factors, stress, or other triggers, the intestinal lining responds by producing excessive mucus. This mucus accumulates in the cecum and colon, interfering with normal digestive function and nutrient absorption. The affected rabbit becomes progressively ill as the digestive system fails to function properly.
Mucoid enteropathy significantly impacts affected rabbits and carries a guarded to poor prognosis without aggressive treatment. The condition typically progresses rapidly once clinical signs appear, and mortality rates historically have been high, particularly in commercial rabbitries where the disease was first recognized. Affected rabbits stop eating, become dehydrated, and may die within days of symptom onset. However, with early recognition, intensive supportive care, and appropriate dietary management, survival is possible, though recovery may be prolonged and relapses can occur.
Early veterinary intervention is critical for rabbits showing signs of mucoid enteropathy. Because rabbits hide illness as a survival instinct, clinical signs may not become apparent until the condition is quite advanced. Any young rabbit showing decreased appetite, abnormal fecal output, or jelly-like mucus in droppings requires immediate evaluation by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.
