Rex breeds with their distinctive coat texture may have skin characteristics that differ slightly in bacterial resistance. High-production breeds selected for large litters may face greater mammary demands. However, these breed associations are theoretical and management factors remain far more important than breed in determining mastitis risk.

Screening and prevention recommendations apply across all breeds. Any doe intended for breeding should have a pre-breeding health check. During nursing, daily examination of mammary glands should become routine practice regardless of breed. Metritis, infection of the uterus, shares some risk factors with mastitis and may occur in the same postpartum period. Complications that may develop from mastitis include abscess formation requiring surgical drainage, tissue necrosis or gangrene requiring debridement or mastectomy, and septicemia if infection spreads systemically. Chronic mastitis may develop if initial treatment is inadequate. Kit mortality may result from inability to nurse or from ingestion of infected milk. Hepatic lipidosis can develop if prolonged anorexia occurs. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances may result from fever and reduced intake.
