Lice infestation (pediculosis) in rabbits is caused by Haemodipsus ventricosus, a species-specific sucking louse that feeds on rabbit blood. Unlike the fur mites that live on skin surface or fur, sucking lice pierce the skin to feed on blood, causing irritation, itching, and in heavy infestations, anemia. While lice infestations were historically more common, particularly in commercial and laboratory rabbit settings, they remain a relevant concern for pet rabbit owners, especially those who acquire rabbits from crowded environments or who house rabbits outdoors where contact with wild rabbits may occur. Lice are strictly host-specific, meaning rabbit lice cannot infest humans or other animal species, and conversely, human lice or lice from other animals cannot establish on rabbits.
Lice infestation occurs through direct contact with infested rabbits or their bedding. Unlike some parasites, lice cannot survive long off their host - typically only 1-2 days - meaning transmission requires fairly close contact. Adult lice spend their entire life cycle on the host, with females cementing eggs (called nits) firmly to hair shafts. The eggs hatch into nymphs that mature through several stages over approximately 2-3 weeks before becoming reproducing adults. This relatively short life cycle allows populations to build rapidly when conditions favor the parasite, particularly in crowded conditions where rabbit-to-rabbit contact is frequent. Many infested rabbits carry low-level populations that become clinically significant only when stress, illness, or immunosuppression allows unchecked multiplication.
The impact of lice infestation on rabbit health ranges from minimal in light infections to significant in heavy burdens. Mild infestations may cause subtle itching and coat changes that are easily overlooked. Moderate infestations produce noticeable scratching, skin irritation, and coat deterioration. Severe infestations, particularly in young, elderly, or debilitated rabbits, can cause significant blood loss leading to anemia, weakness, and even death. The constant irritation affects the rabbit's comfort and wellbeing, potentially leading to stress-induced complications including reduced appetite and the serious condition of GI stasis. Chronic heavy infestations may result in poor growth in young rabbits and general failure to thrive. Secondary skin infections can develop from scratching.
Lice infestations in rabbits are highly treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications prescribed by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Treatment typically involves topical or injectable medications repeated at intervals to kill lice through their life cycle stages, including the eggs that are resistant to many treatments. Because lice cannot survive long off the host, environmental treatment is less critical than for some other parasites, though cleaning bedding and living areas supports resolution. Prognosis is excellent with proper treatment and elimination of reinfection sources. Early detection through regular coat inspection during grooming prevents escalation to severe, health-threatening infestations.
