Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in rabbits is a degenerative condition affecting the cushioning discs located between the vertebrae of the spinal column. These discs normally function as shock absorbers, allowing flexibility and protecting the spinal cord during movement. When disc disease develops, the disc material deteriorates, hardens, or herniates, potentially compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots and causing pain, weakness, or paralysis. While less commonly diagnosed in rabbits than in dogs, IVDD is increasingly recognized as an important cause of spinal problems in pet rabbits, particularly as improved veterinary care allows rabbits to live longer lives.
The development of intervertebral disc disease in rabbits typically follows one of two patterns. Hansen Type I disease involves acute rupture of a degenerated disc, with the inner nucleus pulposus material suddenly extruding into the spinal canal and causing rapid onset of symptoms. Hansen Type II disease is characterized by gradual bulging of the disc's outer layer into the spinal canal, causing slowly progressive symptoms over weeks to months. Both types result from degenerative changes within the disc structure that develop over time due to aging, mechanical stress, genetic factors, or a combination of these elements. The thoracolumbar region of the spine, where the middle and lower back meet, is most commonly affected in rabbits.
The impact of IVDD on affected rabbits ranges from mild back pain to complete hind limb paralysis depending on the severity and location of disc involvement. Mild cases may present as reluctance to hop, reduced activity, or sensitivity when the back is touched. Moderate cases involve visible weakness in the hind legs, altered gait, and difficulty with normal activities like jumping onto raised surfaces. Severe cases result in inability to use the hind legs, loss of bladder and bowel control, and in the most serious situations, loss of deep pain sensation indicating severe spinal cord damage. As prey animals, rabbits instinctively mask signs of pain and weakness, meaning symptoms may be quite advanced before owners recognize a problem exists.
Treatment outcomes for IVDD depend heavily on disease severity at diagnosis and how quickly appropriate care is initiated. Mild to moderate cases often respond well to conservative management including strict rest, pain medication, and anti-inflammatory therapy, with many rabbits regaining normal or near-normal function. Severe cases may require surgical intervention to decompress the spinal cord, though spinal surgery in rabbits carries significant risks and is only performed at specialty centers with experienced exotic animal surgeons. Early intervention is crucialârabbits that receive treatment quickly after symptom onset have substantially better prognoses than those where treatment is delayed. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in treating spinal conditions should evaluate any rabbit showing signs of back pain or hind limb weakness promptly.
