Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions and rabbits naturally hide illness, hypothyroidism may go unrecognized or be misattributed to other causes.
Treatment of confirmed hypothyroidism typically involves thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which can effectively manage the condition if properly dosed and monitored. However, diagnosis presents challenges because hypothyroidism is so rarely documented in rabbits that veterinary experience with the condition is limited, and rabbit-specific thyroid hormone reference ranges are not as well-established as for other species. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian with experience in exotic animal endocrinology is essential for proper evaluation and management. The prognosis for treated hypothyroidism is generally favorable, with most animals showing improvement in clinical signs once appropriate hormone supplementation is initiated, though lifelong treatment is typically required.
