While hyperthyroidism is commonly diagnosed in older cats, the condition occurs very infrequently in domestic rabbits, making it one of the least common endocrine disorders encountered in rabbit medicine. When it does occur, hyperthyroidism can significantly impact a rabbit's health by accelerating virtually every metabolic process in the body, leading to weight loss, increased heart rate, elevated body temperature, and hyperactivity despite increased food consumption.
The causes of hyperthyroidism in the rare rabbit cases documented typically involve abnormal thyroid tissue, most commonly thyroid adenoma, a benign tumor that produces excess thyroid hormone independent of normal regulatory feedback. Less frequently, thyroid carcinoma, a malignant thyroid tumor, may cause hyperthyroidism. Functional thyroid nodules that produce hormone autonomously without forming discrete tumors have also been described. The underlying reasons why some rabbits develop thyroid abnormalities remain poorly understood, though advancing age appears to be the primary associated factor in the limited cases reported. Unlike in cats where dietary iodine and environmental factors have been implicated, no clear environmental or dietary triggers have been identified in rabbit hyperthyroidism.
The impact of hyperthyroidism on affected rabbits involves widespread metabolic acceleration affecting multiple organ systems. The elevated thyroid hormone levels drive increased metabolism, causing rabbits to burn calories faster than they can consume them despite often-ravenous appetites, resulting in progressive weight loss. The cardiovascular system is particularly affected, with increased heart rate and potential cardiac complications over time. Body temperature may run elevated, making rabbits less tolerant of warm environments. Behavioral changes including restlessness, hyperactivity, and irritability commonly occur. Because the condition is so rare in rabbits and symptoms can mimic other more common conditions, diagnosis may be significantly delayed.
Treatment of hyperthyroidism in rabbits, when diagnosed, generally follows approaches adapted from treatment protocols used in cats and other species, though experience specifically in rabbits is limited. Surgical removal of abnormal thyroid tissue offers potential cure when feasible. Medical management using antithyroid medications may control hormone production in cases where surgery is not appropriate. Radioactive iodine treatment, the gold standard for feline hyperthyroidism, is theoretically possible but rarely available or practical for rabbits. Prognosis depends on the underlying cause, with benign adenomas having better outlooks than malignant carcinomas. Early detection and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes, though the rarity of the condition means many cases are diagnosed late in the disease course.
