The eyes are particularly vulnerable, and hypertensive retinopathy with retinal hemorrhage, detachment, or degeneration can cause sudden blindness. The kidneys suffer progressive damage from elevated pressure, creating a cycle where kidney disease causes hypertension that further damages the kidneys. The heart must work harder to pump against elevated pressure, leading to cardiac changes including thickening of the heart muscle. The brain can be affected by hypertensive encephalopathy, potentially causing neurological signs. Blood vessel walls sustain damage from the elevated pressure over time.
Treatment of hypertension in rabbits involves both addressing the underlying cause when possible and using medications to lower blood pressure directly. Antihypertensive medications similar to those used in dogs and cats can be effective in rabbits when appropriately dosed. Management of underlying conditions such as kidney disease is essential for controlling secondary hypertension. Regular monitoring of blood pressure allows assessment of treatment effectiveness.
