Hemorrhagic enteritis can affect any rabbit regardless of breed, with risk primarily determined by age, stress, and environmental factors rather than genetics. However, certain populations face elevated risk. Young rabbits between four and eight weeks of age are at highest risk regardless of breed due to immature immune systems and the stress of weaning. Dwarf breeds may face slightly elevated risk due to their smaller body size and reduced physiologic reserves, meaning they tolerate blood loss and dehydration less well than larger breeds. Commercial breeds raised in high-density conditions experience higher rates due to increased pathogen exposure and stress, though this reflects management rather than genetic susceptibility.

Moderate risk exists across all rabbit breeds under conditions that disrupt normal gut health. Lop breeds may face slightly elevated risk due to associated stress susceptibilities, though this is not well documented. Rex breeds have been reported to have sensitive digestive systems that may predispose to intestinal problems. Young rabbits from any source should be monitored closely during the high-risk weaning period. New acquisitions should be quarantined and observed for any signs of intestinal illness before introduction to existing rabbits. Rabbits from pet stores or high-density breeding operations may have experienced conditions predisposing to intestinal disease and require careful monitoring. Establishing care with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian before problems arise ensures rapid access to treatment. Education about recognizing early warning signs enables prompt intervention. Prevention through proper diet, gradual transitions, and stress reduction is far more effective than treating established hemorrhagic enteritis.
