Hemorrhagic enteritis is a severe and often fatal intestinal condition in rabbits characterized by inflammation of the intestinal lining accompanied by significant bleeding into the digestive tract. This devastating condition results in bloody diarrhea, rapid deterioration, and high mortality rates, particularly in young rabbits. Hemorrhagic enteritis represents a medical emergency requiring immediate aggressive treatment, yet even with optimal care, many affected rabbits do not survive. The condition most commonly affects rabbits between four and eight weeks of age, particularly those undergoing the stress of weaning, but can occur in rabbits of any age under conditions that disrupt normal intestinal health.
The causes of hemorrhagic enteritis in rabbits are primarily infectious, with bacterial pathogens being the most common culprits. Clostridium spiroforme and Clostridium perfringens produce toxins that damage the intestinal lining and blood vessels, causing the characteristic hemorrhage. Other bacterial species including certain strains of Escherichia coli can also cause hemorrhagic intestinal disease. In some cases, viral agents contribute to intestinal damage. The condition typically develops when normal protective gut flora is disrupted, allowing pathogenic bacteria to proliferate rapidly and produce overwhelming quantities of toxins that destroy intestinal tissue.
The impact of hemorrhagic enteritis on affected rabbits is catastrophic. The damaged intestinal lining loses its ability to absorb nutrients and fluids while simultaneously losing blood into the intestinal tract. Affected rabbits develop severe dehydration rapidly, and blood loss can lead to anemia and shock. Bacterial toxins absorbed through the damaged gut cause systemic toxemia with multi-organ effects. Secondary GI stasis develops as intestinal motility fails. The combination of blood loss, fluid loss, toxemia, and metabolic derangement creates a cascade of organ failure that progresses extremely rapidly. Young rabbits with minimal physiologic reserves are particularly vulnerable and may die within twelve to twenty-four hours of symptom onset.
Treatment of hemorrhagic enteritis is challenging and must begin immediately to have any chance of success. Aggressive fluid therapy combats dehydration and shock, appropriate antibiotics target underlying bacterial infection, and intensive supportive care addresses the multiple organ systems affected. However, even with aggressive treatment, mortality rates are high, particularly in very young rabbits or those with severe disease. Prevention is far more effective than treatment, focusing on minimizing stress, maintaining optimal gut health through proper diet, and avoiding conditions that disrupt normal intestinal flora. Rabbit owners must recognize that bloody diarrhea is always a dire emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention.
