Gastrointestinal stasis, commonly known as GI stasis or ileus, is one of the most serious and potentially fatal conditions affecting domestic rabbits. This condition occurs when the normal muscular contractions that move food through the digestive system slow dramatically or stop completely, causing a dangerous backup of contents throughout the gastrointestinal tract. GI stasis is considered a medical emergency in rabbits and can progress from early symptoms to life-threatening illness within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. The condition affects rabbits of all breeds, ages, and sizes, though certain factors such as low-fiber diets, stress, and underlying health problems increase risk significantly.
The causes of GI stasis are diverse but ultimately result in the same dangerous outcome: a gut that stops moving. Primary causes include insufficient dietary fiber, dehydration, stress, pain from any source, and lack of exercise. However, GI stasis also develops secondarily to almost any illness or injury that causes a rabbit to stop eating or experience pain, making it both a disease in itself and a common complication of other conditions. The rabbit's unique digestive physiology, which requires continuous movement of fibrous material through the gut to maintain healthy fermentation in the cecum, makes them extraordinarily vulnerable to this type of digestive shutdown.
The impact of GI stasis on a rabbit's health is severe and multisystemic. When gut motility stops, ingested hair and food material compact into hard masses, gas-producing bacteria proliferate in the stagnant environment, and painful bloating develops. The rabbit stops eating, which rapidly leads to hepatic lipidosis as the liver becomes overwhelmed by fat mobilization. Bacterial toxins produced in the stagnant gut can be absorbed into the bloodstream, causing systemic toxemia. Dehydration worsens as the rabbit stops drinking, further compacting gut contents and impairing function. Without treatment, this cascade leads to shock, organ failure, and death, often within forty-eight hours of symptom onset.
GI stasis is treatable when recognized early and managed aggressively, but the prognosis worsens rapidly with delayed treatment. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause if identifiable, restoring hydration, providing pain relief, stimulating gut motility with medications, and supporting nutrition through syringe feeding. Because rabbits instinctively hide illness as a survival mechanism, symptoms are often subtle until the condition is advanced. Every rabbit owner must learn to recognize the early warning signs of GI stasis, understand that this is always an emergency, and have access to a rabbit-savvy veterinarian who can provide immediate care. Waiting to see if a rabbit improves on its own is never appropriate with suspected GI stasis.
