Gastric stasis typically develops when one or more factors disrupt normal stomach function. Insufficient dietary fiber is the most common underlying cause, as the long fibers in hay are essential for stimulating proper gastric contractions. Dehydration, stress, pain from any source, dental disease, and various illnesses can all trigger gastric slowing. Because the rabbit digestive system is designed for nearly continuous food intake and processing, any interruption in the normal flow quickly creates problems. As stomach emptying slows, the rabbit loses appetite, creating a dangerous cycle where reduced food intake further decreases gut stimulation. Dehydration worsens as water absorption continues while intake decreases. The disrupted stomach environment can lead to bacterial overgrowth and gas accumulation, causing pain and further appetite suppression. Perhaps most seriously, rabbits who stop eating quickly develop hepatic lipidosis as the liver becomes overwhelmed with fat mobilized from body stores. This cascade of complications can become life-threatening within one to three days if left untreated.
Fortunately, gastric stasis responds well to treatment when caught early, making recognition of early warning signs critical. Treatment focuses on restoring hydration, providing nutrition, stimulating gut motility, managing pain, and addressing underlying causes. The challenge lies in early detection, as rabbits naturally hide signs of illness, and subtle appetite changes may be the only initial indication.
