Rabbits with a history of GI stasis are at increased risk for gastric dilation, and those who have experienced gastric dilation should be monitored closely for future GI stasis episodes.

Several conditions present with similar symptoms and must be differentiated from gastric dilation. Gastric foreign body obstruction, where ingested material blocks stomach emptying, causes similar distension and discomfort but may require different treatment approaches including surgical intervention. Intestinal obstruction lower in the digestive tract presents with abdominal distension and pain but shows different patterns on radiographs. Cecal impaction or bloat affects a different portion of the digestive system and requires specific treatment considerations. Abdominal masses, organ enlargement, or fluid accumulation can cause abdominal distension without involving the stomach directly. Accurate diagnosis through physical examination and imaging is essential for appropriate treatment.

Complications of gastric dilation can create additional health challenges. Hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, can develop rapidly in rabbits who stop eating, making nutritional support critical during treatment and recovery. Shock from severe dilation causes organ damage that may have lasting effects. Aspiration pneumonia can occur if stomach contents are regurgitated, particularly during decompression procedures. Gastric rupture, though rare when treated promptly, is fatal. Secondary bacterial infections may develop in compromised tissues. Cardiovascular effects from severe abdominal distension can persist even after the initial crisis resolves. Prevention of these complications relies on early detection, prompt treatment, and careful monitoring throughout the recovery process.
