Gastrointestinal stasis commonly occurs secondary to both galactostasis and mastitis, as the pain and illness cause reduced food intake, and the resulting gut slowdown creates additional serious health risks.

Conditions with similar presentations to galactostasis must be considered in the diagnostic process. Mammary tumors, while less common in rabbits than uterine tumors, can cause mammary enlargement and must be distinguished from engorgement. Pseudopregnancy with associated mammary development but without significant milk production may appear similar to early galactostasis. Abscesses in the mammary region from bite wounds, injections, or other trauma can mimic localized mastitis. Non-mammary abdominal masses, including uterine tumors or bladder stones, might be confused with mammary enlargement by inexperienced examiners. Careful physical examination and appropriate diagnostic testing distinguish these conditions.

Potential complications of galactostasis beyond mastitis include systemic effects of untreated infection and secondary conditions triggered by illness. Septicemia can develop if bacteria from infected mammary tissue enter the bloodstream, causing life-threatening systemic infection.
