Regardless of breed, all outdoor rabbits need winter weather protection, and bringing rabbits indoors during extreme cold is the safest approach. New Zealand Whites and other hardy breeds historically kept outdoors still require protection from extreme temperatures. Mixed breed rabbits may have variable cold tolerance depending on their background. Senior rabbits and those with health conditions face increased frostbite risk regardless of breed and should be housed indoors during cold weather.

Related Conditions

Frostbite commonly occurs alongside or leads to several related conditions that require attention. Hypothermia, or dangerously low body temperature, may accompany frostbite if a rabbit has experienced prolonged cold exposure. While frostbite is localized tissue damage, hypothermia is a systemic condition affecting the entire body and is immediately life-threatening. Rabbits with hypothermia may appear weak, unresponsive, or have a body temperature below 100°F (37.8°C). GI stasis frequently develops secondary to frostbite due to pain, stress, and decreased appetite. This condition, where gut motility slows or stops, can become life-threatening within 24-48 hours and requires aggressive supportive care including syringe feeding, fluids, and gut motility medications.

Several conditions may present with symptoms similar to frostbite and must be distinguished through proper veterinary diagnosis. Ear margin dermatitis caused by fur mites (Cheyletiella, Psoroptes) can produce crusting and scaling of ear edges that might be confused with healing frostbite. Vascular compromise from trauma or tight bandaging can cause tissue death resembling cold injury. Autoimmune skin conditions rarely can affect ear margins. Pressure sores (pododermatitis) on the feet may appear similar to frostbitten foot pads and often require similar supportive care. Burns from heating pads or other heat sources cause blistering and tissue damage that can look like frostbite damage. Accurate history and examination usually differentiate these conditions.

Potential complications of frostbite extend beyond the immediate tissue damage. Secondary bacterial infection is common because damaged skin loses its barrier function, allowing bacteria to invade. Infection signs include increased swelling, discharge, foul odor, and systemic illness. Gangrene may develop in severely frostbitten tissue, potentially leading to sepsis if not addressed. Hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) can develop if the rabbit stops eating due to pain or illness, making nutritional support critical. Chronic pain syndrome may persist long after visible wounds have healed, requiring ongoing pain management. Permanent tissue loss may result in cosmetic changes or, rarely, functional impairment requiring adaptive care strategies.
