Frostbite commonly co-occurs with hypothermia when cold exposure affects the entire body as well as the extremities. While frostbite damages localized tissue through freezing, hypothermia represents a dangerous drop in core body temperature that can be life-threatening. A rabbit with frostbite should be evaluated for hypothermia, particularly if found in a cold environment or showing signs of lethargy, weakness, or collapse. Treatment addresses both conditions, with overall warming taking precedence over extremity rewarming if hypothermia is present. GI stasis commonly develops secondary to the pain and stress of frostbite, making monitoring of appetite and fecal output and proactive supportive care essential components of frostbite management.

Conditions with similar presentations must be distinguished through careful history-taking and examination. Burns from heat sources cause similar tissue damage but with a history of heat rather than cold exposure. Chemical burns or contact dermatitis can damage skin and create wounds. Vascular disease restricting blood flow causes tissue damage without cold exposure. Trauma from other causes can create wounds on the feet and toes. Pododermatitis (sore hocks) causes foot wounds through different mechanisms. Neoplasia may cause tissue changes that could be confused with chronic or healing frostbite. The key diagnostic feature is the history of cold exposure in association with appropriate clinical findings and distribution of damage.

Potential complications of frostbite include secondary bacterial infection of devitalized tissue, which can become serious if not monitored and treated promptly. Osteomyelitis (bone infection) may develop if full-thickness tissue death exposes bone to bacterial contamination. Tissue necrosis following frostbite may require surgical debridement or amputation. Chronic pain may persist in healed areas, particularly if nerve damage occurred. Scarring and permanent tissue changes affect appearance and may alter function. Previously frostbitten tissue has increased susceptibility to future cold injury. Hepatic lipidosis can develop if the rabbit stops eating for a prolonged period due to pain. Understanding these potential complications emphasizes the importance of monitoring, wound care, and follow-up veterinary evaluation throughout the healing process.
