Leg fractures most commonly affect the tibia (shin bone), femur (thigh bone), and the long bones of the foreleg, while foot fractures typically involve the metatarsal and metacarpal bones or the small bones of the toes (phalanges). Fractures represent significant orthopedic emergencies in rabbits that require prompt veterinary attention to achieve optimal healing and prevent permanent disability.
Rabbits are particularly susceptible to fractures due to their unique skeletal anatomy. Their bones are relatively delicate, comprising only about 7-8% of total body weight compared to approximately 13% in cats. Despite this lightweight skeleton, rabbits possess extremely powerful hind leg muscles capable of generating tremendous force. This combination of fragile bones and strong muscles means that fractures can occur not only from external trauma such as falls and crushing injuries but also from the rabbit's own muscular force when kicking or struggling. The tibial bone of the hind leg is especially vulnerable and represents the most common fracture site in rabbits.
The impact of a fracture on a rabbit's health extends beyond the immediate bone injury. Rabbits experience significant pain from fractures, which compromises their ability to move, eat, and perform normal activities. Pain and immobility frequently trigger GI stasis, a potentially life-threatening condition in rabbits that requires concurrent management. Open or compound fractures, where bone has broken through the skin, carry risk of serious infection. The stress of injury and handling can cause shock in prey animals like rabbits. Additionally, improper healing can result in permanent deformity, chronic pain, and disability affecting quality of life.
With appropriate and timely treatment by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in orthopedic surgery, many fractures can heal successfully with good functional outcomes. Treatment options include external stabilization using splints and casts for some fracture types, internal fixation using surgical implants for others, and in some cases amputation when other options are not feasible. The prognosis depends heavily on fracture location, type, and the speed of intervention. Rabbit owners should be aware that any suspected fracture requires emergency veterinary evaluation, as early treatment significantly improves outcomes. Because rabbits instinctively hide pain and weakness, a rabbit showing obvious signs of distress from a fracture is likely experiencing severe trauma.
