Foot pad hyperkeratosis in rabbits is a condition characterized by abnormal thickening and hardening of the keratin layer on the plantar surfaces of the feet, particularly the hind feet. Keratin is the protective protein that forms the outer layer of skin, and in this condition, it accumulates excessively, creating thick, rough, and often cracked tissue on the weight-bearing surfaces of the feet. This condition represents a spectrum of changes that can range from mild callusing to severe thickening that impairs mobility and predisposes to secondary complications. Foot pad hyperkeratosis is commonly observed in conjunction with pododermatitis (sore hocks) and shares many of the same predisposing factors.
The development of foot pad hyperkeratosis results from chronic mechanical stress, friction, and pressure on the foot pads. Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits do not have foot pads; instead, their feet are covered with dense fur that provides cushioning and protection. When this natural protective mechanism is compromised through fur loss, inadequate cushioning, or excessive pressure, the underlying skin responds by producing additional keratin as a protective measure. While this thickening is initially a defensive response, excessive keratin accumulation becomes counterproductive, creating a hard, inflexible surface that is prone to cracking and provides an entry point for bacteria.
The impact of foot pad hyperkeratosis on a rabbit's health varies considerably depending on severity. Mild cases may cause only cosmetic changes with minimal discomfort. However, as the condition progresses, the thickened, cracked skin can become painful, causing affected rabbits to alter their gait and weight distribution. This leads to secondary problems in other limbs as they compensate for discomfort. More severe cases can develop deep fissures that extend into the dermis, creating wounds susceptible to bacterial infection. Because foot problems cause pain and reduced mobility, affected rabbits may become reluctant to move and eat, potentially triggering GI stasis, a life-threatening emergency in rabbits.
With appropriate management focusing on addressing underlying causes and providing supportive care, foot pad hyperkeratosis can typically be controlled to maintain good quality of life. Treatment involves environmental modifications to reduce pressure and friction, topical therapies to soften and protect the affected skin, and management of any secondary infections. Because rabbits instinctively hide signs of pain and discomfort, regular examination of the feet is essential for early detection.
