Fly strike, medically known as myiasis, is one of the most serious and rapidly fatal emergencies that can affect domestic rabbits. This devastating condition occurs when flies, most commonly blowflies (Lucilia sericata) and bluebottles (Calliphora species), lay their eggs on a rabbit's skin, typically in areas soiled with urine or feces. Within hours, these eggs hatch into larvae (maggots) that begin feeding on the rabbit's flesh, releasing toxins and causing catastrophic tissue damage. Fly strike is a true veterinary emergency that can kill a rabbit within 24-48 hours if not treated immediately. The condition is most common during warm months from late spring through early autumn but can occur whenever flies are active.
Fly strike develops when flies are attracted to a rabbit by odors from urine, feces, wounds, or damp fur. Female flies deposit eggs in clusters on the rabbit's skin, particularly around the perineal area, base of tail, skin folds, and any wounds or moist areas. Each fly can lay several hundred eggs at a time. In warm conditions, these eggs hatch into first-stage larvae within 8-12 hours. The maggots immediately begin feeding on skin and underlying tissue, progressing through three larval stages over 2-3 days. As they feed, maggots secrete enzymes that break down tissue and release ammonia and other toxins that cause systemic shock. The damage can extend deep into muscle tissue and body cavities with terrifying speed.
The impact of fly strike on rabbit health cannot be overstated - this is a condition that causes extreme suffering and rapid death without intervention. The toxins released by maggots cause septicemia, shock, and multiple organ failure. The pain is severe and unrelenting. Even with aggressive treatment, survival is not guaranteed, particularly if the condition has progressed beyond early stages. Rabbits who survive may face prolonged recovery, permanent disfigurement, or chronic health problems. The psychological impact on owners who discover fly strike is also significant, as the condition is distressing to witness. Prevention is absolutely critical, as fly strike is far easier to prevent than to treat.
With immediate aggressive veterinary intervention, rabbits with early-stage fly strike can survive and recover. Treatment involves removing all maggots, debriding damaged tissue, intensive fluid therapy, pain management, antibiotics, and often surgical intervention. However, the prognosis worsens dramatically with each passing hour. Rabbits found in advanced stages of fly strike may require euthanasia as the most humane option due to the extent of tissue damage and suffering. This underscores the critical importance of twice-daily checks during fly season and immediate veterinary attention at the first sign of this condition. Any rabbit owner, particularly those with outdoor rabbits or rabbits with risk factors, must be vigilant about fly strike prevention.
