Fly strike, medically known as myiasis, is a devastating and rapidly fatal condition in which flies lay eggs on a rabbit's body, and the hatching maggots feed on the rabbit's flesh. This horrific condition represents one of the most urgent emergencies in rabbit medicine, with death possible within hours of infestation if treatment is not initiated immediately. Fly strike occurs primarily during warm months when flies are active and most commonly affects the perineal region, hindquarters, and any area of the rabbit's body that is soiled, wounded, or otherwise attractive to egg-laying flies. While outdoor rabbits are at highest risk, indoor rabbits are not immune, and any rabbit with factors that attract flies or prevent normal grooming may be affected.
Fly strike occurs when blowflies, bottle flies, or flesh flies are attracted to a rabbit by odors from urine, feces, wounds, or other sources and lay eggs in the fur or on the skin. The eggs hatch into larvae, commonly called maggots, within hours under warm conditions. These larvae immediately begin feeding on the rabbit's tissue, releasing enzymes that digest skin and underlying structures. The maggots also produce toxins that are absorbed into the rabbit's bloodstream, causing systemic illness and shock. The infestation spreads and deepens rapidly, with maggots burrowing into body cavities in severe cases. The combination of tissue destruction, toxin absorption, and secondary bacterial infection makes fly strike life-threatening within a remarkably short timeframe.
The impact of fly strike on rabbit health is catastrophic and accelerates with terrifying speed. Tissue damage from maggot feeding can destroy large areas of skin, muscle, and deeper structures within hours. Toxic shock from absorbed maggot secretions causes collapse, organ failure, and death. Pain from the tissue destruction is severe. Secondary bacterial infection compounds the damage. GI stasis develops rapidly as the rabbit's system responds to the overwhelming assault. Even rabbits that receive treatment may not survive if the infestation is extensive or intervention is delayed. Survivors may require prolonged wound care and face permanent disfigurement. The psychological impact on owners who discover their rabbit with fly strike is severe, and compassionate support is essential alongside medical care.
Treatment of fly strike requires immediate and aggressive intervention to remove all maggots, address tissue damage, combat shock and infection, and support the rabbit through recovery. Every maggot must be removed, a painstaking process that may require sedation or anesthesia given the extent of involvement and the rabbit's compromised state. Damaged tissue must be debrided. Aggressive fluid therapy, pain management, antibiotics, and supportive care are essential. Despite optimal treatment, some rabbits are too severely affected to save, and humane euthanasia becomes the most compassionate option to prevent further suffering. Prevention through fly control, hygiene, and addressing predisposing conditions is far more effective than treating established fly strike and should be the focus for all rabbit owners, particularly during warm months.
