Fur mites such as Cheyletiella and Leporacarus cause similar itching and hair loss but with different distribution patterns and without flea evidence. Atopic dermatitis from environmental allergens causes allergic skin disease typically affecting different body areas. Contact dermatitis causes localized reactions at contact points. Dermatophytosis or ringworm causes skin lesions with hair loss. Food allergies can cause skin symptoms though they are less common in rabbits. Behavioral overgrooming from stress or pain may cause hair loss. The characteristic distribution affecting the lower back and hindquarters combined with flea evidence distinguishes flea allergy from these other conditions.

Potential complications from flea allergy dermatitis include progression of primary disease and secondary problems. Severe secondary bacterial infections can spread to cause cellulitis or systemic illness. Chronic self-trauma leads to scarring and permanent skin changes. Severe anemia from heavy flea burden can be life-threatening, particularly in young or small rabbits. Tapeworm infection, while not usually serious, requires treatment. Chronic discomfort affects quality of life and may impact appetite, potentially contributing to GI stasis. All of these complications can be prevented with prompt recognition and thorough flea elimination. The allergic sensitization is permanent, meaning prevention of flea exposure must continue lifelong to prevent recurrence.
