Breeds at Risk for Epididymitis

Epididymitis can affect any intact male rabbit regardless of breed, and no specific breed predisposition has been clearly established for this condition. However, certain categories of rabbits face elevated risk due to management practices rather than genetic factors. Breeding bucks of any breed face increased risk due to the nature of breeding activities, including exposure to potential pathogens through contact with multiple does and the physical demands of frequent breeding. Breeds commonly maintained for commercial breeding purposes, including New Zealand Whites, Californians, and various meat production breeds, may have higher case numbers simply due to the larger populations of intact, actively breeding males. Similarly, popular pet breeds maintained as breeding animals, including Holland Lops, Mini Rex, and Netherland Dwarfs, may appear frequently in epididymitis cases because of their prevalence in breeding programs.

Giant breeds including Flemish Giants, French Lops, and Continental Giants face considerations related to their size. Their larger scrotal structures may theoretically be more prone to minor trauma during normal activities, though this has not been definitively established as a risk factor. Senior intact males of any breed face increased risk as immune function and tissue resilience decline with age. Any breed or individual with conditions compromising immune function would have reduced ability to fight off infections before they establish in reproductive tissues. Rabbits with chronic respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella may face elevated risk of spread to other body sites including the reproductive tract.

Screening and prevention recommendations apply across all breeds maintaining intact males. Breeding bucks should have regular health assessments including examination of the scrotal contents to detect early abnormalities. Any buck showing scrotal swelling, heat, or pain should be removed from breeding and evaluated veterinarily. Testicular torsion causes acute severe scrotal pain and swelling and constitutes an emergency requiring immediate surgical intervention. Testicular tumors cause gradual scrotal enlargement but typically without the acute inflammatory signs of infection. Inguinal hernia may cause scrotal swelling if intestinal contents enter the scrotal cavity. Hematocele, accumulation of blood in the scrotum, follows trauma and may appear similar to inflammatory swelling. Hydrocele, fluid accumulation, causes swelling without the pain, warmth, and systemic signs typical of infection. Scrotal abscess from other causes may present similarly to epididymal abscess. Potential complications of epididymitis extend beyond the reproductive tract and affect overall health. Abscess formation within the epididymis may occur if infection is severe or treatment is delayed or inadequate. Spread of infection to the testicle results in combined epididymo-orchitis with more extensive tissue involvement. Chronic infection leads to scarring and fibrosis causing permanent fertility impairment. Sepsis may develop if bacteria enter the bloodstream, representing a life-threatening systemic infection. Hepatic lipidosis can develop rapidly in rabbits who stop eating due to illness, adding urgency to maintaining nutrition during treatment.
