Epididymitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the epididymis in male rabbits, a coiled tubular structure located adjacent to each testicle that stores and transports sperm during maturation. This condition may occur in isolation or, more commonly, develops in conjunction with orchitis, inflammation of the testicle itself, in a combined condition known as epididymo-orchitis. The epididymis plays a critical role in male reproductive function, and infection or inflammation of this structure significantly impacts fertility and can cause substantial discomfort for the affected rabbit. While any intact male rabbit can develop epididymitis, the condition is most commonly encountered in breeding bucks and older intact males.
The condition typically results from bacterial infection that reaches the epididymis through various routes. Bacteria may ascend from the urethra and vas deferens, spread through the bloodstream from infections elsewhere in the body, or be introduced during breeding contact with infected females. Common causative organisms include Pasteurella multocida, which is ubiquitous in rabbit populations, as well as Staphylococcus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other opportunistic pathogens. Treponema cuniculi, the spirochete causing rabbit syphilis, can also affect the genital region though it more typically causes external genital lesions. Once bacteria establish infection in the epididymis, inflammation develops rapidly and can progress to abscess formation if untreated.
Epididymitis significantly impacts both the affected rabbit's welfare and reproductive capacity. The inflammatory process causes pain and swelling in the scrotal region, leading to behavioral changes, reduced activity, and potentially decreased appetite. Affected bucks typically show reluctance to breed and may be unable to produce viable sperm. The condition may become chronic if not adequately treated, with abscess formation and scarring that permanently impairs fertility. Additionally, infected bucks may transmit bacteria to does during breeding, spreading infection through a breeding colony. Like any painful condition in rabbits, epididymitis can trigger secondary GI stasis through stress and reduced food intake.
Treatment options for epididymitis include antibiotic therapy with rabbit-safe medications, supportive care, and in many cases, surgical neutering which provides definitive treatment by removing the affected tissue. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for the best outcomes, though rabbits characteristically hide signs of illness, and by the time obvious scrotal swelling is noticed, the infection may be well-established. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian should evaluate any male rabbit showing signs of scrotal abnormality, as accurate diagnosis guides appropriate treatment selection. For pet rabbits not intended for breeding, neutering is often recommended both for treatment of the current condition and prevention of recurrence and other reproductive issues.
