The condition develops when the eyelid loses its normal tension and ability to rest snugly against the eyeball surface. This can occur due to congenital malformation where the rabbit is born with inadequate eyelid structure, or it may develop later in life due to scarring from previous injuries, chronic inflammation, or age-related loss of muscle tone in the eyelid tissues. In some cases, facial nerve paralysis or trauma affecting the muscles that control eyelid positioning can also result in ectropion. The lax eyelid fails to distribute the tear film properly across the cornea, creating areas of dryness while simultaneously allowing tears to overflow onto the facial fur.
Ectropion significantly impacts a rabbit's ocular health and overall comfort. The exposed conjunctiva becomes chronically inflamed and irritated, often developing a thickened, reddened appearance. The cornea, normally protected by the closed eyelid and tear film, becomes vulnerable to desiccation, ulceration, and secondary bacterial infections. Left untreated, chronic corneal exposure can lead to scarring, neovascularization, and potentially vision impairment. Additionally, the constant eye irritation can cause discomfort that affects the rabbit's eating habits and activity levels, potentially triggering secondary complications such as gastrointestinal stasis in severe cases where pain reduces appetite.
Treatment for ectropion in rabbits typically requires surgical correction to restore proper eyelid positioning, combined with ongoing management to protect the eye during healing. The prognosis is generally favorable when the condition is addressed promptly by an experienced rabbit-savvy veterinarian, particularly one familiar with ophthalmic surgery in exotic species. Early detection is crucial, as rabbits instinctively hide signs of discomfort and illness, meaning the condition may be more advanced than initially apparent by the time owners notice obvious symptoms.
