The condition develops because calcium is essential for milk production, and a nursing doe with a large litter may be producing substantial quantities of calcium-rich milk daily. When dietary calcium intake and skeletal calcium reserves cannot keep pace with this output, blood calcium levels plummet rapidly. This metabolic imbalance triggers a cascade of neuromuscular dysfunction because calcium plays critical roles in muscle contraction, nerve signal transmission, and cellular function throughout the body.
Eclampsia has profound effects on the rabbit's neuromuscular system, causing muscle tremors, weakness, incoordination, and potentially fatal seizures. The condition can progress from subtle early signs to life-threatening collapse within hours, making early recognition absolutely critical.
