Crusting can range from fine, dandruff-like scales to thick, adherent scabs that leave raw, moist skin when removed. Secondary bacterial infection of ringworm lesions produces additional signs including increased redness, swelling, discharge, and odor. Some rabbits develop a more generalized skin condition with widespread scaling and hair thinning rather than distinct circular patches, a presentation more common in immunocompromised individuals. The coat around affected areas may appear dull or have an abnormal texture due to fungal damage to hair shafts.
Symptom progression in untreated ringworm follows a predictable pattern, though the timeline varies based on immune status and environmental factors. Initial small lesions gradually expand as the fungal infection spreads outward through the skin. New lesions may appear at distant sites as spores are transferred during grooming or scratching. In immunocompetent rabbits, individual lesions typically reach a maximum size over two to four weeks before the immune response begins to control the infection. Central healing may become apparent, with new hair growth in the center of older lesions while the active border continues to expand. Without treatment, the disease may persist for two to four months before spontaneous resolution occurs, though some rabbits develop chronic infections lasting much longer. Immunocompromised rabbits may show progressive worsening without the self-limiting course seen in healthy animals, potentially developing extensive skin involvement with secondary complications.
Certain symptoms require immediate veterinary attention and should be recognized as emergency warning signs. Widespread skin involvement affecting large portions of the body surface indicates severe infection requiring aggressive treatment. Signs of secondary bacterial infection, including purulent discharge, significant swelling, extreme redness, or foul odor, require prompt antibiotic therapy in addition to antifungal treatment. If a rabbit with ringworm stops eating or produces fewer or no fecal pellets, this represents a potential GI stasis emergency that takes priority over the skin condition. Any rabbit showing signs of severe pain, significant weight loss, or marked depression should receive immediate veterinary evaluation. Open-mouth breathing, while not directly related to ringworm, always constitutes a dire emergency requiring immediate attention. If ringworm lesions are present near the eyes and causing ocular irritation, discharge, or apparent vision problems, urgent evaluation is needed to prevent permanent eye damage.
