If purchasing a rabbit from a breeder, inquire about dental health in the breeding line and avoid rabbits from lines with known problems. Any rabbit from a high-risk breed should receive more frequent dental examinations, potentially every six months rather than annually. X-rays may be recommended periodically to monitor tooth root health before problems become apparent. Diet becomes even more critical, with strict emphasis on unlimited hay consumption. When adopting rescue rabbits of unknown background, assume potential dental disease risk and monitor accordingly. Recognize that even with excellent care, some genetically predisposed rabbits will develop dental issues, and early intervention remains the key to best outcomes.

Dental abscesses frequently co-occur with or develop secondary to other dental conditions in rabbits. Dental malocclusion, where teeth do not align and wear properly, is the most common underlying condition leading to abscess formation. Molar spurs, sharp points that develop on overgrown cheek teeth, can lacerate the cheeks or tongue and provide entry points for bacteria. Incisor overgrowth often accompanies cheek teeth problems and indicates systemic dental disease. Tooth root elongation, visible on skull X-rays, frequently precedes abscess development as elongating roots weaken and eventually become infected. Periodontal disease with gum recession and loosening of teeth in their sockets increases infection risk. Any rabbit with one dental problem should be monitored carefully for development of others.

Dental abscesses can lead to several serious complications if not properly managed. GI stasis is the most common and dangerous complication, developing when pain causes reduced food intake and the rabbit's digestive system slows or stops. Hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, can develop rapidly in rabbits that stop eating. Extension of infection into the nasal cavity or sinuses causes chronic respiratory symptoms. Osteomyelitis, infection of the jaw bone, complicates treatment and worsens prognosis. Spread to the eye socket can threaten vision. Rarely, systemic spread of infection causes septicemia. Chronic pain affects quality of life even when infection is controlled. Secondary skin infections can develop around draining wounds. Recognizing and addressing these complications promptly is essential for successful management of dental abscess cases.
