Polish rabbits, Mini Rex, and other small breeds developed through selection for small size may have concentrated genetic factors predisposing to developmental variations including cryptorchidism. The concentration of genetics in smaller gene pools that occurs when developing and maintaining dwarf breeds may increase the frequency of recessive genes affecting testicular descent. Breeders of dwarf varieties should be particularly vigilant about screening for cryptorchidism and removing affected animals from breeding programs.

While less commonly reported, cryptorchidism can occur in any rabbit breed. Standard breeds including Dutch, Mini Lop, and various commercial breeds occasionally produce cryptorchid individuals. Giant breeds including Flemish Giants and French Lops may have lower incidences, though specific prevalence data is limited. Mixed breed rabbits have variable risk depending on their genetic background. Breeds developed from small founder populations or with significant inbreeding may have higher rates due to concentration of deleterious recessive genes. Any breeding line with a history of cryptorchidism should be carefully managed to reduce incidence through removal of affected individuals and their close relatives from breeding.

Screening recommendations for cryptorchidism should be part of standard evaluation for any male rabbit intended for breeding. Physical examination should confirm both testicles are present and descended, which can reliably be assessed by three to four months of age in most rabbits. Breeders should examine young bucks before making breeding decisions and document findings. Veterinary pre-breeding examinations provide professional confirmation. Buyers of breeding stock should request confirmation that both testicles are descended or should examine the rabbit themselves before purchase. For pet rabbits not intended for breeding, identification of cryptorchidism directs surgical planning, as abdominal exploration requires different preparation than standard neutering. Rescue organizations adopting out rabbits should note cryptorchidism status for any intact males, as this affects neutering requirements and cost.

Related Conditions

Several conditions may co-occur with or relate to cryptorchidism in male rabbits. Inguinal hernia, where abdominal contents protrude through the inguinal canal, may occur in rabbits with the abnormal inguinal anatomy sometimes associated with cryptorchidism. Both conditions involve the inguinal ring, and abnormalities in its development or size can contribute to both. Testicular neoplasia, or cancer of the testicle, is the most significant condition that develops as a consequence of untreated cryptorchidism, with retained testicles having substantially higher cancer rates than normally descended testicles. Other congenital abnormalities may occasionally occur alongside cryptorchidism in rabbits with broader developmental issues, though cryptorchidism typically occurs in isolation. GI stasis may develop secondary to pain if complications such as testicular torsion occur, or following surgical intervention if post-operative care is inadequate.

Conditions with similar presentation that must be differentiated from cryptorchidism include previous castration, which would also result in absent scrotal testicles but without the cancer risk or behavioral effects of retained testicular tissue. Testing testosterone levels distinguishes between these possibilities. Testicular atrophy from previous injury, infection, or other causes results in very small testicles that may be difficult to palpate but are technically present. True anorchia, congenital absence of one or both testicles, is rare but possible. Ectopic testicle placement, where the testicle descends but into an abnormal location outside the usual pathway, is uncommon. Intersex conditions are rare in rabbits but could theoretically cause confusion about expected anatomy.

Potential complications of cryptorchidism primarily relate to the retained testicle itself. Testicular neoplasia represents the most significant long-term risk, with various tumor types possible and risk increasing with age. Sertoli cell tumors, seminomas, and interstitial cell tumors may occur. Some testicular tumors produce hormones causing systemic effects. Testicular torsion, where the retained testicle twists on its blood supply, causes acute severe pain and requires emergency surgery. Inguinal herniation can occur if the inguinal ring remains abnormally patent. After surgery, standard surgical complications are possible including infection, dehiscence, and hemorrhage, though these are uncommon with experienced surgeons. Post-operative GI stasis remains a risk with any rabbit surgery and requires vigilant prevention through appropriate pain management and nutritional support.
