Cryptorchidism is a congenital condition in male rabbits where one or both testicles fail to descend from the abdomen into the scrotum during normal development. The term derives from Greek words meaning hidden testicle. In normal rabbit development, the testes form within the abdomen near the kidneys and descend through the inguinal canal into the scrotal sacs typically by twelve to fourteen weeks of age, though this timing can vary. When this process fails to complete, the affected testicle remains either within the abdomen or lodged in the inguinal canal, resulting in cryptorchidism. The condition may be unilateral, affecting only one testicle, which is more common, or bilateral, affecting both testicles.
Cryptorchidism occurs due to failure of the normal developmental process that guides testicular descent, with the exact cause often involving genetic factors that affect the gubernaculum, a structure that pulls the testicle through the inguinal canal, or hormonal signaling that triggers descent. The condition has a clear hereditary component in rabbits, and affected individuals should never be used for breeding even if they have one normally descended testicle, as they will pass the genetic predisposition to offspring. Various factors may influence whether a genetically predisposed rabbit actually develops cryptorchidism, including developmental timing and possibly environmental factors during gestation.
The health significance of cryptorchidism in rabbits extends beyond reproductive concerns. Retained testicles remain at body temperature rather than the cooler temperature of the scrotum, which causes the retained testicle to produce abnormal or nonviable sperm. More importantly, retained testicles have a significantly increased risk of developing testicular cancer compared to normally descended testicles. The retained testicle continues to produce testosterone, meaning cryptorchid rabbits exhibit normal male behaviors including territorial marking, mounting, and potential aggression, despite their reproductive impairment. Additionally, inguinal hernias may occur in conjunction with cryptorchidism or may develop in rabbits with abnormally patent inguinal canals.
Surgical neutering is the recommended treatment for cryptorchid rabbits, requiring removal of both the retained and any descended testicles. This surgery is more complex than standard neutering because the retained testicle must be located and removed from within the abdomen or inguinal canal. The procedure should be performed by a veterinarian experienced with rabbit surgery and abdominal procedures. Early surgical intervention is recommended to eliminate cancer risk and prevent unwanted male behaviors from becoming established. Prognosis following successful surgery is excellent, with affected rabbits going on to live normal, healthy lives as neutered pets.
