In rabbits, this condition manifests as white, gray, or crystalline opacities that may range from subtle haziness to dense, clearly visible deposits depending on the quantity and depth of lipid accumulation. Corneal lipidosis can occur in two distinct forms: a hereditary form related to genetic abnormalities in lipid metabolism, and an acquired form associated with systemic hyperlipidemia from dietary, metabolic, or other factors. Both forms produce similar corneal changes but differ in their underlying causes and management approaches.
Rabbits have been extensively studied regarding corneal lipidosis due to the well-characterized hereditary form occurring in New Zealand White rabbits. This breed develops corneal lipid deposits as part of a genetic syndrome affecting cholesterol metabolism, making them valuable animal models for studying human corneal lipid disorders. The hereditary condition follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern and typically becomes visible in young adult rabbits. Acquired corneal lipidosis, in contrast, can occur in any breed and is associated with elevated blood lipid levels from obesity, high-fat diets, or underlying metabolic diseases.
The impact of corneal lipidosis on rabbit health depends primarily on the extent and location of lipid deposits. Small peripheral deposits may cause no functional impairment and go unnoticed by owners. Larger or centrally located opacities can obstruct the visual axis and impair vision. The condition itself is generally painless unless complicated by secondary corneal problems. However, corneal lipidosis may indicate underlying systemic disease that has broader health implications, making thorough evaluation important even when eye signs seem minor.
Management of corneal lipidosis focuses on addressing any modifiable underlying factors and monitoring for progression or complications. The hereditary form cannot be cured because the genetic defect persists, but affected rabbits often maintain good quality of life despite corneal changes. Acquired lipidosis may partially or fully resolve if the underlying hyperlipidemia is successfully corrected through dietary modification or treatment of metabolic disease.
