Critical to note, any reduction in appetite from heart failure can rapidly lead to GI stasis, which then becomes a concurrent emergency requiring its own treatment alongside the cardiac condition. The interplay between these conditions often complicates management.

Conditions with similar symptoms that must be distinguished from congestive heart failure include primary respiratory diseases such as pasteurellosis, pneumonia, and other infections that cause breathing difficulties without cardiac involvement. Cardiomyopathy causes similar signs but refers specifically to disease of the heart muscle rather than the syndrome of heart failure. Pleural effusion or abdominal fluid from other causes such as cancer must be differentiated. Heat stroke causes rapid breathing and collapse. GI stasis with gastric dilation can cause respiratory compromise from abdominal pressure. Thorough diagnostic evaluation including imaging and echocardiography distinguishes these conditions and identifies concurrent problems.

Potential complications of congestive heart failure include progressive worsening of the underlying heart disease despite treatment, acute decompensation episodes requiring emergency intervention, thromboembolic events where blood clots form due to altered blood flow, and secondary organ failure affecting kidneys, liver, or other systems. Medication side effects including electrolyte imbalances from diuretics may occur. GI stasis from reduced appetite is a constant threat requiring vigilance. Hepatic lipidosis may develop if the rabbit stops eating for extended periods. Muscle wasting and cachexia occur in advanced disease. Preventing complications requires careful medication management, close monitoring, prompt response to early warning signs, and maintenance of adequate nutrition throughout the disease course.
