Intestinal coccidiosis is one of the most common and significant parasitic diseases affecting domestic rabbits worldwide, caused by various species of the protozoan parasite Eimeria that specifically target the intestinal tract. Unlike hepatic coccidiosis caused by Eimeria stiedae, intestinal coccidiosis involves multiple Eimeria species including E. perforans, E. magna, E. media, E. irresidua, and several others, each with specific preferences for different regions of the intestinal tract. These parasites are highly host-specific, infecting only rabbits and closely related lagomorphs. Intestinal coccidiosis represents the most frequent cause of diarrhea and enteric disease in young rabbits, particularly those recently weaned, and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in breeding operations, pet stores, shelters, and individual households with multiple rabbits.
Transmission of intestinal coccidiosis occurs through the fecal-oral route when rabbits ingest sporulated oocysts from their environment. Infected rabbits shed enormous numbers of oocysts in their feces, with peak shedding occurring during active infection. These oocysts require one to four days in the environment to undergo sporulation and become infectious, a process requiring adequate oxygen, moisture, and warmth. Once sporulated, oocysts are remarkably resistant to environmental conditions and can survive for months to years in contaminated soil, bedding, and on surfaces. Young rabbits typically encounter these parasites shortly after weaning when maternal antibody protection wanes and environmental exploration brings them into contact with contaminated materials. Adult rabbits often develop immunity through repeated low-level exposure but can serve as asymptomatic carriers maintaining environmental contamination.
The impact of intestinal coccidiosis on rabbit health ranges from subclinical infection with no obvious symptoms to severe, life-threatening enteritis with profuse diarrhea, dehydration, and death. Disease severity depends on the parasite species involved, the number of oocysts ingested, the rabbit's age and immune status, and environmental factors including stress and concurrent disease. The parasites damage intestinal epithelial cells during their reproductive cycle, disrupting normal absorption and secretion. This intestinal damage causes diarrhea, which leads to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. In young rabbits with heavy infections, the combination of fluid loss, nutritional compromise, and secondary complications can prove rapidly fatal. Even surviving rabbits may suffer growth setbacks and increased susceptibility to other diseases.
Treatment of intestinal coccidiosis is effective when initiated promptly, combining antiparasitic medications with supportive care to address dehydration and maintain gut function. However, prevention through environmental management and good sanitation is far more effective than treating established disease. The challenge of coccidiosis control lies in the environmental persistence of oocysts and the difficulty of complete environmental decontamination. Working with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential for accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and development of prevention strategies tailored to individual situations. Rabbit owners should understand that intestinal coccidiosis is extremely common, highly contagious between rabbits, and particularly dangerous for young rabbits, making sanitation and early intervention critical priorities.
