Intestinal coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoan organisms of the genus Eimeria that infect the intestinal lining of rabbits. This condition represents one of the most common and economically significant parasitic diseases affecting domestic rabbits worldwide. Multiple species of Eimeria specifically target different regions of the rabbit intestinal tract, with at least eleven species known to cause intestinal disease in rabbits. The condition ranges from subclinical infections in healthy adult rabbits to severe, life-threatening disease in young, stressed, or immunocompromised animals. Understanding intestinal coccidiosis is essential for rabbit owners because early recognition and treatment can prevent serious complications and death.
The coccidia parasites are transmitted through the fecal-oral route when rabbits ingest oocysts, the resistant environmental stage of the parasite, from contaminated food, water, bedding, or surfaces. Once ingested, the parasites undergo a complex life cycle within the intestinal cells, causing varying degrees of damage depending on the species involved and the number of parasites present. The intestinal forms of coccidiosis should be distinguished from hepatic coccidiosis, which is caused by a single species, Eimeria stiedai, that specifically targets the liver. Intestinal coccidiosis tends to cause gastrointestinal symptoms while hepatic coccidiosis affects liver function, though both forms can occur simultaneously.
The impact of intestinal coccidiosis on rabbit health varies tremendously based on the age and immune status of the affected rabbit, the species and quantity of coccidia involved, and environmental factors. Young rabbits between weaning and four months of age are most severely affected because they lack immunity and their intestinal tracts are still developing. In these vulnerable populations, severe infections can cause profound diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and death within days. Adult rabbits with healthy immune systems often harbor low levels of coccidia without showing clinical signs, though stress, concurrent illness, or immunosuppression can tip the balance toward clinical disease. The damage to intestinal cells impairs nutrient absorption and can predispose rabbits to secondary bacterial infections and the dreaded complication of gastrointestinal stasis.
Treatment of intestinal coccidiosis is generally effective when initiated promptly, using appropriate antiparasitic medications combined with supportive care. The prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment begins and the severity of infection at the time of diagnosis. Mild infections in otherwise healthy rabbits carry an excellent prognosis, while severe infections in young or debilitated rabbits may be fatal despite aggressive treatment. Prevention focuses on excellent sanitation, reducing environmental contamination with oocysts, and minimizing stress. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment, as the condition requires specific medications and supportive care protocols that differ from those used in other species.
